“Mrs. Schuler, when is the week of fun going to happen? It’s my favorite week and I have all of my days planned.”
I still remember a darling little second grader, Lilly, asking me that question one day after Christmas break while walking through the halls of the elementary school that I served at as principal years ago. Her giddiness and excitement shown with her facial expressions still make me chuckle to this day. She did not disappoint; her plans were fabulous!
What she was eagerly anticipating was National Catholic Schools Week. National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2022 is Jan. 30 – Feb. 5.
Wonderful school traditions as well as newly sparked ideas surround these celebrations and create memories for students to carry with them for years to come.
A Catholic education is a wonderful gift for students and during this week they are able to focus on this gift and celebrate by showing what they have learned about God’s love for them individually, how to love others through servant-minded leadership, Catholic social teachings through action, academic achievement, sports achievement, friendship and why following the way of Christ is the basis for it all.
At each school, students share this with parents, faculty, parishioners and the community in their own unique ways. The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2022 is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Service.”
These past two years of the pandemic have tested us in so many ways, and it also has shown the admirable resilience and pure love of more than 600 talented parish and school administrators, faculty, staff, volunteers and the roughly 10,000 parents who have dedicated themselves to the spiritual and academic formation of nearly 5,000 students by choosing Catholic education.
The many sacrifices made by all of these people to ensure this school year could happen, in person, for the students is a testament to their wonderful spirit and the thriving Catholic community in which we belong. This is no small feat and serves as a wonderful example. God is good, thank you!
We invite you to learn more about our wonderful schools and faith-filled communities! For more information about enrolling your child in an Archdiocese of Oklahoma City Catholic school, call or visit the school of your choice. Find more information in this issue of the Sooner Catholic and online at
