For 50 years, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has provided funding to groups that empower individuals to break the cycle of poverty for themselves as well as defend the dignity of all human beings in the United States.
An annual collection in all Catholic parishes helps to end poverty in America through funding CCHD’s anti-poverty grants and education programs. Without generous support, this good work would not be possible. One-fourth of the money collected each year in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City is used to fund local grants. Below are just a few examples of the projects in the archdiocese that have received past support:
nBuilding Understanding and a Voice in the Community is a project through Saint Charles Catholic Church’s Peace and Justice Committee that advocates for public policy respecting the common good of people. Focus areas for the project include economic, immigration, education and restorative justice.
n Developing Hispanic Leaders is a project to develop leaders in the Hispanic community in Mustang through VOICE training. Grant funds help with dues and the services of a trainer to train the leadership team on how to engage the Hispanic population at the parish to become aware of and how to address issues affecting their families.
n Gabriel’s Angels is a program supported by the Project Gabriel Ministry at Saint Benedict in Shawnee which embraces the sanctity and dignity of life by nurturing pregnant and parenting women. In partnership with the parish family, multi-faith-based networks and community organizations, the program empowers families by providing education, practical assistance, mentoring and support. It pairs mentors with mothers who desire to grow as a parent and as an individual. The Woman to Woman program strives to provide skills for the mothers and their children by supporting their emotional, spiritual, and educational growth.
n RestoreOKC is a grant funded by the national CCHD office, which created a program called Restore Farms that partners with the northeast side of OKC. The farm’s mission is to empower youth with experiences in basic job skills, sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurship and incentivize graduation and higher-education for long-term community opportunity. The program focuses on providing job training for youth in the community and healthy food access for the neighborhood.
To help programs like these continue to make lasting changes for communities in the archdiocese, consider a gift to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. The annual collection will take place on Nov. 21-22.
