Most dioceses in the United States celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension on the Seventh Sunday of Easter. In select dioceses, this solemnity is a holy day of obligation on May 9. In the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, it will be celebrated on Sunday, May 12.
“The Ascension marks the end of Christ’s earthly ministry. He came to save our souls; this redeeming work is accomplished so he ascends to heaven,” said Deacon John Harned of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Oklahoma City.
Deacon John also notes that this feast day should give everyone great hope, because in his ascension, people are given physical proof that we all have the opportunity to be with him in heaven.
It is also important to note, the deacon said, that while “Jesus ascends into heaven under his own power; he does not leave us without hope, the Holy Spirit is our advocate. The hope is in the future, that we will be able to join him in heaven.”
