Deacon Byron Ray Jacobson, Sr. died July 19. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He was born on Aug. 30, 1955, in Port Hueneme, Calif., to his loving parents, Russell Eugene Jacobson and Vivian Jane (Chase) Jacobson.
He married Cheryl Jacobson on Jan. 10, 1976, in Las Vegas, Nev., They have five children, their spouses and 12 grandchildren. Deacon Byron began his career with the United States Postal Service in 1977. He began as a letter carrier in the San Fernando Valley area of California. Moving up the ladder quickly, this brought his family to make the move from California to Norman, as he accepted the position as postmaster in 1990. He finished his career with the postal service at the National Center for Employee Development in Norman.
Deacon Byron was ordained a deacon for the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City on Nov. 6, 1998. Following his retirement from the postal service, he faithfully served as the pastoral associate at Saint Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Norman until August 2018.
To say he was the perfect gentleman would be an understatement. He was a good listener, the voice of reason, honest and humble. Those blessed to know him, loved him. There are no words to express how much his family and friends will miss him.
Deacon Byron is survived by his wife of 46 years, Cheryl Jacobson; sons, Byron Jacobson, Jr. (Allie) of North Carolina, Daniel Jacobson (Katie) of North Carolina; daughters, Meredith McCornack (Kenny) of Norman, Tanya Kohout (Bryan) of Norman, Becky Moran (Chasen) of Norman; mother, Vivian Jacobson; brother, Rusty Jacobson (Cheryl) of Basehor, Kan.; sisters, Tina Cunningham (John) of Yukon, Nancy Hughes of Norman; grandchildren, Madison, B.J., Alexis, Ashlyn, Charlee, Marshall, Eliot, Max, Ruby, Ryan, Madelyn, Jake; and a host of other family and many friends.
A prayer vigil was held July 25 at Saint Andrew Catholic Church in Moore. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 26 at Saint Andrew Catholic Church with interment following at Saint Joseph Cemetery in Norman. Online condolences may be shared at tribute.care.
