Mary Dresel, from Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sulphur, was named the 2022 Catechist of the Year during the 2022 Catechetical Conference held on Sept. 17 at Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School in Oklahoma City.
Dresel has volunteered at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church for six years and currently teaches confirmation and first communion classes. She is known for exuding kindness, happiness and love in all that she does. She is active in the church and students say that she actually lives what she teaches in the classroom.
Prior to volunteering at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Dresel has served the archdiocese since 1996, first as a teacher at Villa Teresa Catholic school in Oklahoma City, and then as a teacher and principal at Saint Philip Neri Catholic School in Midwest City until 2016, when she moved to Sulphur.
Dresel was nominated by Rosalina Aglialoro-Hoyle and Father Aaron Foshee at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
The other two finalists for Catechist of the Year were Karen Armbruster from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alva and Kevin Konrade from Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Purcell.
