November is a solemn month within the Catholic Church, a chance to remember the faithful departed. Starting with All Saints Day and All Souls’ Day, it continues through Nov. 30 to remember those who have fallen asleep, as well as those still in purgatory.
The National Shrine of the Infant Jesus at Prague and Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Prague are celebrating the holy days, and the month of November, with special activities.
All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation and falls on Friday, Nov. 1, for 2024. Nov. 2 is recognized as All Souls Day.
“On the first, we pray for the saints, and on the second, for their souls,” said Father Christopher Hai Tran, pastor and rector of the National Shrine of the Infant Jesus.
For All Saints Day, Mass will be celebrated at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church, with the All Souls’ Day Mass at the Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Prague.
Prayers and almsgiving continue through November, honoring those who have passed.
“The Church uses the whole month of November to pray for the saints and the souls in purgatory, the community of saints, all those dead and living surrounded by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,” Father Tran said.
“On the first of November we celebrate the Feast of All Saints, and we remember with joy and thankfulness all those who have gone before us, and who are now enjoying the eternal happiness face-to-face with God,” Father Tran said.
All Souls Day is a celebration of those who have passed, or the faithful departed.
“On the second of November we are celebrating All Souls Day, also known as the ‘Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed,” he said. “Praying for the beloved departed is an ancient custom among the Christians.
“In November, we cannot help but remember our loved ones who have died. Separation is still the most painful thing in life, but with the belief in the resurrection, death is eliminated, the dead are still present close to us.
“This is a source of blessing for those who believe in the resurrection.”
