March Madness During the month of March At Cristo Rey OKC Catholic High School, it’s March Madness. Yet instead of basketball, the madness involves universities all over the country.
Each day, the Student Council at Cristo Rey OKC heads to both lunch groups and asks each student to vote for a university. The votes are tallied for each university, with the winner named the next day during the morning announcements.
Once there are four schools left, each grade will be assigned with a school and there will be a penny war to determine the winner of March Madness.
A busy March 12 On March 12 there a college fair was held for sophomores and juniors. Many colleges and universities provided information on what they have to offer. Students asked questions and gathered information, providing a great opportunity for all students to learn more about not only schools from Oklahoma, but from other parts of the country.
Also that day, several student ambassadors visited the Oklahoma State Capitol for the Parental Choice Tax Credit rally.
Myself and fellow sophomore Laila Barr, along with juniors Arlem Escobar and Nicole Figueroa attended the rally. Cristo Rey President Deby Snodgrass accompanied the girls and provided an interesting tour of the capitol and introduced them to many people. The girls enjoyed Chick-Fil-A and met the first president of Cristo Rey during their lunch time.
After lunch they went to the rally where Governor Kevin Stitt spoke about the PCTC and the opportunities it has provided for many families in the state of Oklahoma. The rally served as a platform to demonstrate the value of the PCTC to our legislators. After the rally, the girls got to meet and take a picture with the governor.
Viva Cristo Rey! On March 13, all the students had time to go to confession and pray about whatever is going on in their lives.
It involved an hour in the gym where students were encouraged to pray, journal, read and work on lent coloring pages while waiting for confession. Four priests heard confessions and many students took advantage of the opportunity.
For students who weren't Catholic, they were able to talk to a priest about whatever is going on in their hearts and get advice from the priest.
Spring break Spring Break presented several students the opportunity to take a trip to Italy.
A mix of sophomores, juniors and seniors left on March 15 for a week abroad, following a night watching a Thunder game at Paycom Center downtown. Mariana Carrera is a sophomore at Cristo Rey OKC Catholic High School.
