Oklahoma Catholics looking to support local Catholic businesses this Christmas have several shopping options, including a new Catholic bookstore in southwest Oklahoma City.
After eight years of operating Cordero De Dios Libreria out of their garage, Norma and Salvador Vasquez moved their bookstore to a storefront location earlier this year. Located on S.W. 44 near Western Avenue, the bookstore is within walking distance of Saint James the Greater Catholic Church.
The store offers an impressive selection of books and gifts, both Spanish and English, for children and adults. For the Vasquezes, it is more than just a bookstore; it is how they minister.
“When people come and buy anything, each item will help people to know more about God,” Norma Vasquez said.
New arrivals at Cordero De Dios Libreria include nativity sets, advent wreaths and books, including the recently released title “Elwood: The Story of a Catholic World War II Hero.” Also included in the store’s literary options are Catholic books on parenting teenagers and tweens, black Catholic saints, holiness in motherhood and parenting children with special needs.
The Vasquezes also own Saint Joseph the Worker bookstore in Norman.
In northwest Oklahoma City, the Saint Thomas More bookstore on May Avenue offers several new items for Christmas, including Gregory Cameron’s new release, “An Advent Book of Days: Meeting the Characters of Christmas.”
For children, there is Sandy Eisenberg Sasso’s new release, “The Raven and the Dove, the Big Fish, and the Stubborn Donkey: Stories of Animals From the Bible.”
At Trinity Mercantile in Edmond, shoppers will find the recently released children's book “Saints Around the World” by Meg Hunter-Kilmer as well as several Oklahoma-themed candles from 46th State Candle Company. The locally-made candles feature scents such as Lakes of Oklahoma, Thunderstorms of Oklahoma and Speakeasy, a mix of mahogany, tobacco and leather scents. Another gift idea is David Warren’s title, “Brilliant: 25 Catholic Scientists, Mathematicians, and Supersmart People.”
Holy Family Catholic Church in Lawton has a bookstore located inside the parish, in the religious education hallway. Open before and after Mass on weekends as well as Wednesdays while faith formation is in session, the store offers a selection of books, gifts, rosaries and crucifixes.
Store owners said the benefits of supporting locally-owned Catholic businesses are greater than simply supporting a small business and crossing names off of a Christmas list. Every item that is purchased serves as a tool for evangelization, Norma Vasquez said.
