The parishioners and volunteers at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Ada were enthusiastic over the fact that its major fundraiser will be returning to the original format. They will be able to offer the community the options of dining in, taking out, shopping at the parish bazaar, buying tamales or purchasing goods at the parish bake sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 5. Over the past few years, COVID-19 had limited the program to take-out only.
The smorgasbord committee meets every two weeks for more than two hours. They communicate frequently to ensure everyone is safe and healthy and to make certain that the church will be able to provide nearly 1,000 meals to the Ada community. It asks all 250 families to participate. Nov. 5 will mark the 74th year for the smorgasbord. The people of Ada look forward to the annual event which draws many Catholic and non-Catholics to the parish.
“This as a unifying event for our parish and community,” Deacon Dennis Fine said.
Father Maurice Costello, O.S.B., started the annual event in 1950. The event has remained popular over the years and includes turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cheesy grits, Swedish meatballs, a tamale and dessert.
Father Aaron Foshee, pastor of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, said, “This year, we are excited to introduce a new factor to the smorgasbord. We will be inviting those who participate to learn more about the saints by connecting this great parish tradition to the Solemnity of All Saints. Each table will have a representation of a specific saint, with information about him or her, so that they can come to know more about our friends in heaven, who intercede for us. Many people who participate in the smorgasbord are our neighbors from other faith traditions. What an awesome opportunity to share our Catholic faith with them! I’m really excited about this next stage in the history of this rich tradition of Saint Joseph!”
Tickets can be purchased from any Saint Joseph Catholic Church parishioner or at the door.
