The Sooner Catholic received seven awards from the Catholic Media Association during the 2024 Catholic Media Conference held June 18-21 in Atlanta. Awards are from 2023 publications.
Archbishop Coakley won third place in the Best Regular Column by Bishop or Archbishop category for his Put Out into the Deep columns in the Sooner Catholic.
Managing Editor Dana Attocknie won third place for the Best Layout of an Article or Column in the diocesan newspaper division for her layout/design of the "Discipleship Conference gathers more than 1,000 Catholics from Oklahoma, beyond" article published in the Aug. 27, 2023, Sooner Catholic.
Freelance photographer Chris Porter won five awards: First place for Best Photograph – Spot News for a photograph at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Festival held by parishioners from Sacred Heart Catholic Church at the Bl. Stanley Rother Shrine on Dec. 10, 2023, at the shrine.
First place for Best Photograph – Hot Topic Eucharistic Revival for a photograph at a Eucharistic Procession held by parishioners at Saint Joseph, Saint Mark the Evangelist and Saint Thomas More Catholic Churches on Sept. 6, 2023, in Norman.
Second place for Best Photo Story – Feature for photographs from a live Stations of the Cross held by parishioners at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at the Bl. Stanley Rother Shrine on April 7, 2023, at the shrine.
Third place for Best Photograph – General News Photo for a photograph from the Oklahoma March for Life on Jan. 21, 2023, in Oklahoma City.
Third place for Best Photograph – Holy Days/Liturgical Seasons for a photograph from the live Stations of the Cross held by parishioners at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at the Bl. Stanley Rother Shrine on April 7, 2023, at the shrine.
The Sooner Catholic is the official newspaper for the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City and is mailed to more than 50,000 households to assist Archbishop Coakley, clergy, parishes, schools and staff to spread the Good News of the Gospel and to “Go Make Disciples!”
