Dear Archdiocese of Oklahoma City School Families,
The Catholic Education Department has become aware of a troubling post that is being shared this week on the social media platform TikTok. This has been part of a national TikTok trend and to our knowledge did not originate locally. While we do not believe the threat to be credible at this time in our local community, we are closely monitoring the situation and taking it seriously. The post refers to a threat to school safety “for every school in the USA, even elementary,” on Friday, December 17.
The local police departments have been aware of the recent posts and additional presence in the areas of our schools has been requested. School will be held as normal tomorrow with finals occurring as previously scheduled at middle school and high school levels as applicable.
Even if this is not a credible threat, it creates a situation that can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for our students, families, and staff. We ask our families to monitor their children’s social media activity and remind them about proper behavior online. These types of posts are negative for everyone involved.
Any threats that originate from a Catholic School within the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City will not only be quickly investigated but there are both school and criminal consequences for making such threats. Please visit with your child about these consequences.
If you or your child becomes aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else, please contact the police and your school office.
As always, thank you for your commitment to Catholic education as we work together to ensure a safe, secure, and positive learning spaces for our students.
Sincerely, Lara Schuler Archdiocese of Oklahoma City Director of Catholic Education 7501 Northwest Expressway Oklahoma City, OK 73123 https://archokc.org/schools
