Archbishop Paul Coakley joined parishioners from Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Norman to bless the new columbarium at the cemetery. The blessing, following Mass celebrated by the archbishop, took place Holy Trinity Sunday on May 26.
“A cemetery is a sacred place where we lay to rest the bodies of those who have died,” said Father Joseph Irwin, pastor at Saint Joseph. “The cemetery is a place of prayer and hope. We pray for the repose of the souls of the faithful departed. We wait in hope for that soul to rest in the eternal peace of Christ. We all wait for the Resurrection of the Body in the fullness of time.
“We welcome Archbishop Coakley as he blesses our new columbarium that will contain the cremains of our faithful who await Jesus and his merciful love.”
Saint Joseph cemetery added 124 new niches, capable of holding two urns per niche. Also, they offer a personal estate columbarium’s, companion monument, single urn monument, double-sided columbaria, and the small columbarium (which has six niches).
“This new addition meets the needs of Catholic families in Norman who choose cremation and desire a beautiful and sacred place for their loved ones to rest,” Father Irwin said. “All the parishes in Norman use this space and benefit from this new addition to our cemetery. It represents our shared faith in the love and mercy of Jesus.
The project carried a total price of $78,000, with some funding still needed. To support the project, visit pushpay.com/g/stjosephsok, scroll down and choose Saint Joseph Cemetery Project.
