Bishop John Carroll Catholic School students will present Into the Woods JR., a new take on the Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine musical fairytale, at 6:30 p.m. on April 26-27 at The Connor Center, located just north of The Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Oklahoma City.
Admission is free and all ages are welcome.
The middle school students will offer Oklahoma City a different way to think about some favorite fairytale characters in a show that has a run time of one hour and features 31 students spanning grades 6 to 8. The musical is directed by the school’s music teacher, Cierra Musick Jennings.
Into the Woods JR. is based on the Broadway production which won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book and Best Actress in a Musical. The musical follows a baker and his wife who learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the witch next door. The couple embark on a quest – swindling, deceiving and stealing from such already-victimized characters as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Jack (fresh off the beanstalk) – to get the special objects required to break the spell.
From the first rehearsal, the students have collaborated on gaining a new perspective on these fairytales and the ethical issues these stories in their work performing, designing props, lights, and scenery, along with assistant directing and working backstage.
