OKLAHOMA CITY – On March 21 the Oklahoma Supreme Court issued its opinion in a 5-4 decision in which the majority declared a right to abortion in the state's constitution.
The Most Rev. Paul S. Coakley, Archbishop of Oklahoma City, and Most Rev. David Konderla, Bishop of Tulsa, issued the following statement:
"While it’s not clear what the implications from Tuesday's ruling will be, we are clear that the Oklahoma Constitution does not include a right to an abortion, and we are hopeful the Court's decision only applies to exceedingly rare cases where a mother's life is in danger. Our focus must continue to be providing support and resources to families in need and connecting with expectant mothers who need reassurance they are not alone. Let us pray for the conversion of hearts and minds to embrace each child as a gift from God.”
