As the first month school comes to a close, the Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School environment remains bustling with students thriving both academically and socially.
AP Art For the first time, McGuinness will be offering three full-year AP art classes. Many previous art students wished to take these classes, which prompted their addition. This year, art teacher Monica Orr will teach AP Drawing, AP 2D Design and AP 3D Art. In response to the added number of art students, the loft of the art room has been cleaned out to provide a place for AP students to work.
Essay Winners Freshmen Ryan Kanaan, Sydney Black and Amelia Currie took first, second and third place in the middle school division of the Catholic Women’s Council essay contest last spring. On Sept. 4, representative Linda Tucker came to recognize the Irish winners and present them cash prizes. Along with the middle school winners, graduate Charlotte Waldo won second place in the high school contest.
“I think it's pretty cool that we got a clean sweep of all the awards,” campus minister Kelly Allen said.
Better Bishop In preparation for the Irish’s annual Battle of the Bishops game, students bought “better bishop” jerseys. Students will be able to wear their jerseys instead of a uniform top on game days to support the team. McGuinness took on Bishop Kelley in Tulsa on Sept. 6.
Mama Mia! Received with excitement, theater director Brett Young announced that this year's spring musical will be “Mama Mia.” Casting for the musical is currently underway with the first showing set for Nov. 14.
Club Walkabout The Aug. 28 club walkabout was marked a success by the many students who filled the commons. Mostly freshmen, students who attended joined existing clubs promoted by poster boards. Another club walkabout will be held to introduce new clubs later this month.
Drama in the parking lot As with many parts of high school, drama may arise in the strangest and most unexpected places, so it comes with little shock that it has entered the parking lot. Senior parking is a longstanding tradition at McGuinness, but where junior parking stops and senior parking starts has been a source of conflict between the two classes. Most recently, some unlucky juniors found chalk marker warnings left on their windows last week.
BSLS Freshmen girls received a warm welcome from the Big Sis Little Sis Club as freshman hall was lined with welcome baskets from anonymous upperclassmen Sept. 4. The club’s goal is to provide mentorship and positive role models to freshmen girls during their first year of high school. On Sept. 6, upperclassmen revealed their identities and met their mentees in person for the first time.
