Home Sweet Homecoming Homecoming week started off with a bang at the Sept. 12 assembly organized by the Clancy Club, where 17 seniors were nominated for the homecoming court. Those nominated include Cali Williams escorted by Noah McReynolds, Chloe Wisdom escorted by Charlie Fuhrman, Eliza Garrett escorted by Liam Crabtree, Ellie Torres escorted by Harris Greene, Lily Cunningham escorted by Teddy Wright, Peri Mossman escorted by Bryce Schwarz, Violet Austerman escorted by Nathan Steiner and Zara Harroz escorted by Cooper Bradley. Students celebrated this year’s Home Sweet Homecoming theme with dress up days. Senior StuCo chair of assemblies William Gauthier said the theme is all about bringing back childhood memories and celebrating life’s sweet moments.
Sticking with this theme, the week’s dress up days were pajamas on Monday, nerds and smarties on Tuesday, red, white and blue on Wednesday, twins on Thursday and no school on Friday. The homecoming queen was to be crowned at halftime during the Sept. 20 game against Bishop Carroll.
Irish go to Texas For the first time, the football team traveled to Dallas to compete in the annual “Catholic Bowl,” where they triumphed over Bishop Lynch. During the Catholic Bowl, six catholic high schools from Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas gathered to celebrate Mass and share dinner before a weekend of competition.
Cheer heads to regionals After months of preparation, Irish cheer is set to take the floor at 1:50 p.m. Sept. 21 Coach Mandy Gerszewski said the team is optimistic, but will have to keep its nerves in check. “They only have two minutes to get the job done, and they know what they need to do to make magic happen,” Gerszewski said.
Since moving back to 5A, the team has taken on a harder routine, but remains essentially the same, Gerszewski added.
“The team is on track during practices, and they have been training super hard since July, so the entire coaching staff has faith in them,” Gerszewski said.
School Service On Sept. 18, seniors attended their final class retreat.
“It feels exciting knowing that we’re all closer to graduating, but I’m just trying to have fun and participate because it’s the last one,” senior Rebecca Horn said.
During the retreat, students created Halloween cards for the Boys and Girls Club of Oklahoma County, and participated in other class activities.
Also in service to others, the Irish Outreach Club made positive affirmation and bible verse clothes pins to clip on student’s backpacks and discussed mental health awareness. Graduates Return …
Sept. 11, students celebrated Grandparents Day with a Mass and breakfast organized by Coach Ryan Stringer’s leadership class. The class composed an appreciation video for grandparents, which played during breakfast. Many grandparents were returning alumni, who were surprised at the school’s new expansion.
Father Joe Uhen, a 1976 graduate, returned from Peru to celebrate McGuinness’s second all-school Mass during Father Rick’s absence. Uhen spoke to students about the school’s Peru mission trip and encouraged them to pay attention to what God is calling them to do, and to take opportunities to serve others. After Mass, senior Joseph Coats was named the September Student of the Month.
