LAWTON – A robotics team from Saint Mary Catholic School in Lawton was awarded the Excellence Award at the Rumble in The Falls Vex Robotics Competition held Feb. 3 in Wichita Falls, Texas. The award is the highest award to be earned at Robotics Competitions and was awarded to the Starry Knight team for overall excellence in building a high quality VEX Robotics program.
“I’m extremely proud of the Starry Knight team for winning their fourth award for this year,” said Brian Morris, coach of the Saint Mary robotics program. “They have worked very hard and it has been paying off.”
Saint Mary’s Dragon Warriors and Pop Tarts teams also competed in the event. Out of 32 total teams, the three Saint Mary teams were the only middle school teams competing. Overall scores placed Starry Knight in sixth place, Dragon Warriors in 12
th place and Pop Tarts in 17
th place.
Saint Mary has had a nationally recognized robotics program for several years, having been ranked in the top 25 percent nationally and as the top middle school team in Oklahoma. This year, team Starry Knight has qualified for nationals based on a Design Award they earned at a competition in Claremore.
They will travel to Iowa in April to compete against the nation’s best.
“It’s really exciting that we get to go to nationals,” said Bianca Arroyo, one of the Starry Knight team members. “This is my first year to be on the Robotics Team. I’ve learned that the most important part of being on a robotics team is working together to build programming and working on our robot to get points as a team.”
Out of 35 teams in Oklahoma, team Dragon Warriors is ranked No. 6 and team Starry Knight is ranked No. 10.
Saint Mary is the region’s only fully-accredited Catholic school, serving grades Pre-K – 8
th grades. The school strives to develop the whole student – mind, body and spirit – in a safe and supportive environment.
