BALTIMORE – The U.S. bishops on Wednesday elected Archbishop Paul Coakley as chairman-elect of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development.
“I am encouraged by the trust of my brother bishops to help lead our efforts to educate and equip Catholics to improve the lives of our most vulnerable brothers and sisters, advocate for the poor and follow our call to respect the dignity of every human person,” Archbishop Coakley said.
Archbishop Coakley will take over the post in November 2019. The committee assists the bishops, both collectively and individually, in advancing the social mission of the Church through education, poverty awareness, outreach, policy development, advocacy and the organization of low-income communities. The committee advises the bishops on issues of human dignity, development and poverty.
