May 7, 2021OKLAHOMA CITY – U.S. Rep. Stephanie Bice, R-Edmond, talked on Thursday about faith, family and the issues facing the U.S. Congress at the Assembly of Catholic Professionals in downtown Oklahoma City.
Bice, who was elected in November to represent Oklahoma’s 5th District, said her freshman year in Congress has been a whirlwind, including being chosen president of the freshman class in the U.S. House of Representatives. She is the first woman to be elected president of the freshman class.
“Running for public office wasn’t something that had ever occurred to me, but it was actually my work in the Church and in the community that inspired me,” she said. “These are the things that I am being called to do, to help other families, to be of service … to protect life and protect religious freedom. That’s why I was elected.”
Bice and her family are parishioners at Saint Eugene Catholic Church in Oklahoma City. She said her faith has sustained her as she adjusts to serving in Congress.
“Many politicians struggle with their faith. Being faithful to the teachings of God, faithful to the teachings of Jesus in this time has really become a political statement of its own,” she said. “But, my faith gives me the moral values to withstand the present day realities and it has helped me to find the strength needed to move forward and do what I believe I have been called to do.”
Bice said issues being discussed in the U.S. House include environmental issues, bills affecting families, energy needs and the infrastructure plan being proposed by President Biden, which she said should be pared down to include only true infrastructure needs.
The Assembly of Catholic Professionals is a network of business and professional leaders who meet quarterly to engage more fully in the life of the Catholic Church in Oklahoma.
