Pope Francis named Arizona Bishop Edward Weisenburger as the new archbishop of Detroit in a move on Feb. 11.
Weisenburger, a former priest and vicar general in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, had served as bishop of Tucson, Arizona, since 2017, and previously as bishop of Salina, Kansas. In Detroit, he replaces retiring Archbishop Allen Vigneron.
A native of Illinois, Weisenburger grew up primarily in Lawton and was ordained to the priesthood in 1987 in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. His first assignment as priest was at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Ponca City. He was later named pastor of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Okarche, then pastor and rector of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Oklahoma City, before being named Bishop of Salina in 2012.
Weisenburger also served a variety of roles in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, including as vice chancellor and on the diocesan tribunal, and was involved with prison ministry for several years. He also notably served as an on-site chaplain at the site of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.
