Catholic Sisters Week: The 6th annual National Catholic Sisters Week will be March 8-14. The week is part of National Women’s History Month and highlights the important contributions religious women make to their communities, often without much thanks or recognition.
The story of black Catholics in the United States is about communities tenaciously clinging to faith amidst great hardship. Much of their history is centered in the South, which to this day has the largest concentrations of blacks in the United States, and includes more than two dozen of the dioceses served by Catholic Extension.

On March 2, El Reno’s Sacred Heart Catholic Schools will host its annual Taste of Sacred Heart that attracts more than 500 people and has gained in popularity. It is El Reno’s major fundraising event for its school. The Taste of Sacred Heart will include food tasting booths, a $3,000 raffle, plus live and silent auctions.
SHAWNEE – After months of uncertainty, the monks of Saint Gregory’s Abbey have received the good news that they will retain ownership of more than 450 acres of land surrounding their monastery in Shawnee. The monks had offered the land in 2017 as collateral for a loan to shore-up Saint Gregory’s University as it sought participation in a USDA bond program. The university entered into bankruptcy after its application for the financing program was denied.
LAWTON – A robotics team from Saint Mary Catholic School in Lawton was awarded the Excellence Award at the Rumble in The Falls Vex Robotics Competition held Feb. 3 in Wichita Falls, Texas. The award is the highest award to be earned at Robotics Competitions and was awarded to the Starry Knight team for overall excellence in building a high quality VEX Robotics program.
Christ the King Catholic School in its 12th year of honoring a distinguished alumnus recently announced this year’s winner -- Jennifer “Jenny” Airington Richard.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking invites people to host or attend a prayer service that fosters awareness of and support for victims of trafficking.
The year was 1909, when a group of four priests and three laymen from the Diocese of Mobile, Ala., sought to change the course of history. Together these pioneer men formed the first chapter of the Knights of Peter Claver (KOPC). This was the first organization to allow men of color membership in a fraternal society.
Participants from Altus to Shawnee attended the Day of Reflection on Jan. 23 at Saint Gregory’s Abbey. Abbot Lawrence Stasyszen, O.S.B, led the 25 attendees, “Through the Year with Mary.”
OKLAHOMA CITY – Archbishop Coakley recently announced the hiring of Branden Seid as the executive director of Resurrection Memorial Cemetery in northwest Oklahoma City near the Catholic Pastoral Center. Seid replaces Christina T. Ford, who retired Feb. 5 after nearly 40 years of dedicated service, including 23 years as director.
