A recent gathering at a rural Catholic church highlighted painful emotions rising to the surface as a Native American couple sought perspectives of people affected by Oklahoma Catholic boarding schools in the state between 1880 and 1965.
The sessions are part of the Oklahoma Catholic Native Schools Project launched by the archdiocese and the Diocese of Tulsa in fall 2021. The project focuses on Catholic boarding schools for Native Americans that were operated from 1880 to 1965 in the state.
The Oklahoma Catholic Native Schools Project seeks to understand the history of Catholic Indian boarding schools in Oklahoma by gathering oral histories from former students and their descendants, studying documentation on Catholic Indian boarding schools from parishes, religious orders, tribes, the U.S. Department of the Interior and other reputable sources.
The three Oklahoma Catholic organizations hired the Native American studies scholar to conduct research for the Oklahoma Catholic Native Schools Project that was launched by the faith groups in fall 2021. The project includes listening sessions and the collection of oral histories, which will be combined with his research into a report.
