WASHINGTON - In response to the news of the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops offered the following statement from its spokesperson, Chieko Noguchi, director of public affairs.
When ninth grade students at Cristo Rey OKC Catholic High School filled the hallways as the inaugural class in 2018, a bell system had not yet been installed. School staff stood in the hallway and rang a bell by hand to signal class changes and dismissal times.
“As we read the names of the 10 innocent men and women who were victims of a targeted attack in Buffalo, N.Y., we are reminded that racism and violence still profoundly affect our culture. This evil causes great harm and it corrupts the souls of those who harbor racist or prejudicial thoughts. I invite you to join me in a particular prayer for the victims of recent shootings in our nation and for all victims of violence and racism, and their families.”
