    • Conclave Coverage
      Cobertura del Cónclave

The conclave to elect the next pope has been scheduled to begin on May 7, 2025. The conclave will begin with a "Mass for the Election of the Roman Pontiff” in St. Peter’s Basilica on the morning of May 7, before processing into the Sistine Chapel while chanting the “Veni Creator Spiritus,” invoking the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

    • How will the next pope be chosen? / ¿Cómo se elegirá al próximo Papa?
      • The pope is elected by the College of Cardinals during a gathering called a conclave, held in the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. Only cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote. After prayer and discussion, the cardinals cast secret ballots up to four times each day until one candidate receives a two-thirds majority. Once elected, the chosen cardinal is asked if he accepts. If he does, he becomes the new pope. White smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel chimney signals to the world that a new pope has been chosen.

    • What is a "conclave?" / ¿Qué es un "cónclave?"
      • A conclave is the secret meeting where the cardinals gather to elect a new pope. The word "conclave" comes from Latin, meaning "with a key," because historically, the cardinals were locked in a room until they made a decision. The first formal conclave was in 1274, after long papal elections had caused delays in Church leadership. Today, conclaves are held in the Sistine Chapel under strict rules to ensure prayerful reflection, confidentiality, and a timely election of the new pope.

    • Who votes in a conclave? / ¿Quién vota en un cónclave?
      • Only cardinals who are under the age of 80 at the time the papacy becomes vacant are eligible to vote in a papal conclave. These cardinals are called "cardinal electors." The age limit was established by Pope Paul VI in 1970. He set the rule that cardinals over 80 could no longer vote to ensure that those making the decision are still actively involved in the life and work of the Church. It also helps keep the number of voters manageable during the conclave.

    • How long does a papal conclave usually last? / ¿Cuánto tiempo suele durar un cónclave papal?
      • There is no set length for a conclave. Some conclaves have lasted just one day, while others have taken several days or even weeks. Most modern conclaves are completed within a few days.

    • What happens immediately after a new pope is elected?
      • Once a cardinal receives the required two-thirds majority vote, he is asked whether he accepts his election. If he agrees, he immediately becomes pope, even before any formal ceremony. The new pope then chooses the name he will use during his pontificate, often honoring a saint, a former pope, or a spiritual ideal.

After accepting, the new pope is led to a small room next to the Sistine Chapel called the "Room of Tears." It is named for the emotion many new popes feel upon realizing the weight of their new responsibility. In this room, he changes into papal vestments — with robes prepared in small, medium and large sizes.

Once dressed, he returns to the Sistine Chapel to pray briefly with the cardinals. Then, the senior Cardinal Deacon appears on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica and announces to the world: "Habemus Papam!" ("We have a pope!").

Moments later, the new pope steps onto the balcony, greets the faithful, and gives his first blessing, known as the "Urbi et Orbi" ("to the city and to the world").
